A calmer, happier school environment

Introduced at the start of the academic year, the new approach means students are now unable to access their phones during the school day. Each pupil places their phone in a secure, lockable pouch on arrival, which can only be unlocked at home time using special devices managed by staff.

“We’re really noticing a sense of calm around our young people these days – they seem to be in a better place, they seem to be happier,” said Helen Jones, Executive Headteacher. “It’s transformed the mood of the school.”

The new policy was introduced following growing concerns about the negative effects of phone and social media use on pupils’ wellbeing.

“Over recent years, we saw a significant rise in issues linked to social media, from online disagreements to increased anxiety,” Mrs Jones explained. “We realised we needed to act to protect our young people and help them focus on learning and positive relationships.”

A six-hour break from social media

After researching solutions, the school partnered with Phone Locker, a company providing lockable pouches designed to promote focus and wellbeing in schools. Appleton ordered around 1,700 pouches ahead of the new term and worked closely with parents and students to ensure the smooth introduction of the system.

On arrival each morning, pupils place their phones in the pouch and lock it before lessons begin. The pouches remain sealed throughout the day, only being unlocked as pupils leave the site.

“This new policy gives pupils a six-hour break from the noise and the harms that can come from social media,” Mrs Jones said.

The school has made reasonable adjustments for pupils who need access to medical apps and continues to teach online safety and digital wellbeing through the curriculum. Staff also ensure that any pupils needing to contact home can do so using a school phone, with support available where required.

Overwhelmingly positive response

The response from pupils, parents and staff has been overwhelmingly positive.

“We’ve had very little pushback,” Mrs Jones said. “Many pupils tell us they feel happier and are having fewer social issues. They’re talking to each other more at break and lunchtime, and staff say the school feels calmer and more focused.”

Since the change, phone-related behaviour incidents have dropped significantly. The policy has also been praised by parents, with some even asking if their children can use the pouches at home to reduce evening screen time.

“We thought this change would work, but we didn’t think it would work as well as it has,” Mrs Jones added. “It’s transformed the mood of the school.”
